Top 10 Spa Trends for 2009

As the New Year gets off to a great start, many spa owners all over the nation are brainstorming about what new spa treatments, wellness therapies, fitness and beauty treatments they can offer that will attract more customers to their business and increase their revenue. Spas are shifting their focus from simply pampering their customers to offering entire wellness packages focused on a healthier lifestyle approach. Fitness, nutrition, yoga and medicine are powerfully pushing their way to the forefront of the spa industry. Here are the top 10 spa trends emerging for 2009.

- Energy Therapies: Nowadays, everyone is talking about how they can save energy. Energy therapies, such as Reiki, healing touch, acupuncture, chakra balancing, as well as magnetic light and sound therapy will become much more popular than in the past. Energy medicine is popular both in the spa industry and the medical industry. Electromagnetic therapies promote healing and help clear imbalances within the body.
- Casino Spas: Spas located inside casinos are some of the most profitable spas in the world. Casino spas offer world-class luxury and cater to high rollers who are ready and willing to shell out big bucks to be lavishly pampered. The impressive Venetian Hotel Canyon Ranch SpaClub located in Las Vegas is the largest spa in the world. It contains over 90 treatment rooms that cater to every health and wellness therapy imaginable. Casinos are aware that their guests want to feel pampered and rejuvenated during their stay. What better way than to open up a spa inside the casino?
- Medical Wellness: In 2009, watch out for the line that separates the medical industry from the spa industry to blur a bit. Hospitals are now offering aesthetic procedures, skin rejuvenation treatments, preventative centers and alternative therapies to their patients, similar to what spas are offering.
- Eco-Friendly Spas: Spas are now being designed with the “green” guest in mind. Eco-friendly materials are being used to build and furnish spas from floor to ceiling using recycled wood and other salvaged materials. Organic, non-toxic products are being applied during massages and skin therapy sessions. Spas are also cutting down on water use and electricity. It seems as if a more holistic approach is surfacing; a belief that the earth and human body should be in direct harmony with one another.
- Spas In-Transit: Spas are targeting the weary traveler by plane, train and boat. Airports are catching onto the fact that travelers are tired, overstressed and are in much need of relaxation and rejuvenation, so they are opening spas inside their airports. Planes are now being equipped with spa showers and offer massage treatments. Some trains are fully equipped with gyms and spas, and also offer healthy cuisine on their menu. Cruise ships are also targeting their spa savvy customers by offering spa treatments and rejuvenation programs onboard.
- Brain Gyms: Many spa goers list their health as the number one reason to frequent spas. Keeping the brain active and stimulated on a daily basis helps to slow the ageing process. Brian work-out’s are popping up all throughout spas. There are now spa menu options that include activities, technologies, and education programs to help stimulate the mind. Neurowave chairs are being placed in spas to stimulate brain function.
- Mini-treatments: Stress is an overwhelming epidemic across the world. Spa staffers are being educated on various methods to alleviate stress and also teach their customers mini-techniques that they can do themselves to relive stress. Mini-treatments such as breathing exercises, meditation, hot baths, and even mini-chair massages can reduce stress on a daily basis. More spas are turning their attention on the soul and focusing efforts to enhance the overall well-being of their clients. Spirituality, life coaching and other soul uplifting programs are becoming more popular.
- Thoughtful Spending: As the economic year struggles to climb out of a recession, more spa owners are coming up with mindful spending prices for spa treatments that their customers can afford. Luxury spas are having to work harder to explain why their spa treatments deserve such high prices. Spas are competing for business by offering discounted massages and special spa treatments to keep their business afloat during such tough economic times.
- Generation X and Y: Spa clientele is shifting its way from the baby boom generation to Generation X and Y. Younger spa members are frequenting spas more than ever. They demand high-tech treatments to achieve their aesthetic and personal relaxation needs. Spas will have to cater to this generation in order to achieve success. Spas are rethinking design choices as well as spa treatment options to offer. Cutting-edge technology is quickly making its way into spas with sound, light and high-tech massage tables and equipment.
- Brand Identity: With so much competition out there, many spas are focusing their efforts on creating brand identity in order to stand out. Those spas that broadcast their identity in a clever, catchy, and visually appealing way are standing out the most and thereby attracting more visitors. Spas are developing creative websites that showcase their unique menu options and signature products. Creating a strong identity in a highly-competitive industry helps spas establish credibility and helps to create a stronger clientele base.
